Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket. The game is played on a rectangular court, divided into two main sections with a hoop elevated at each end. Players can advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while moving) or passing it to teammates. Points are scored by making field goals—worth two or three points depending on the distance from the hoop—or free throws, which are worth one point each and awarded after certain fouls.
Basketball combines elements of physical agility, coordination, strategy, and teamwork. It is governed by rules that cover gameplay, fouls, violations, and scoring. The sport originated in the late 19th century and has since evolved into a globally popular activity played at all levels, from amateur leagues to professional competitions like the NBA. Basketball also emphasizes skills such as shooting, dribbling, rebounding, and defense. The game is played both indoors and outdoors and can vary in format, including street basketball and organized leagues.
